Ruling on the Fast of a Pregnant Woman Experiencing Bleeding During Ramadan
❖ Source:
This ruling is extracted from the book 500 Questions and Answers for Women, based on the Fatwas of the Scholars of the Haramain, translated by Hafiz Abdullah Saleem.
Does the bleeding experienced by a pregnant woman during the days of Ramadan affect her fast?
❀ Answer:
When a woman experiences menstrual bleeding while fasting, her fast becomes invalid, because the Prophet ﷺ said:
أليس إذا حاضت لم تصل ولم تصم؟
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ḥadīth no. 298]
"Is it not true that when a woman menstruates, she neither prays nor fasts?"
Therefore, we count menstrual blood among the things that invalidate a fast.
The ruling for postnatal bleeding (nifās) is the same as that of menstruation (ḥayḍ); both types of bleeding invalidate the fast.
As for a pregnant woman experiencing bleeding during Ramadan:
If a pregnant woman continues to see bleeding at regular intervals, consistent with her menstrual cycle even after becoming pregnant, then according to the sound opinion, this is considered menstrual blood, and the rulings of menstruation apply to it.
But if after becoming pregnant, her regular bleeding ceased, and later she sees blood in an irregular manner, then this blood will not affect her fast, because it is not considered menstrual blood.
