Fasting and Night Vigil of 15th Sha‘ban: No Authentic Proof

Excerpt Source:
This excerpt is taken from the book Ahkām wa Masā’il in the Light of the Qur’an and Sunnah by Shaykh Mubashir Ahmad Rabbani.

Question:

Is the night vigil (qiyām) and fasting on the 15th night of Sha‘bān established by any authentic ḥadīth?

Answer:

In this regard, a narration attributed to Sayyidunā ʿAlī رضي الله عنه is often quoted:

إذا كانت ليلة النصف من شعبان فقوموا ليلها وصوموا نهارها
“When it is the night of mid-Sha‘bān, observe the night in worship and fast during the day.”
Reference: Mīzān al-Iʿtidāl: 10024

Reference: Tadhkirat al-Mawḍū‘āt: 45

Reference: Kanz al-ʿUmmāl: 35188

This narration is fabricated (mawḍū‘). Its chain contains Ibn Abī Sabrah, about whom Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal and Imām Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn stated that he used to fabricate narrations.

Therefore, this narration is fabricated, and due to this reason, it is not correct to specifically observe the night vigil of Shab-e-Barā’at and to fast the following day with special emphasis.

However, those individuals who already have the habitual practice of fasting on Mondays and Thursdays, or on the 13th, 14th, and 15th of every lunar month (Ayyām al-Bīḍ), or those who fast every alternate day, then if the 15th of Sha‘bān coincides with their regular practice, there is no harm.

But to specifically single out this night for staying awake and to specifically fast the following day is not correct.
