Farewell Ṭawāf After ʿUmrah – Ruling, Evidences, and Scholarly Opinions

Ruling on Farewell Ṭawāf (Ṭawāf al-Wadāʿ) After ʿUmrah – Complete Explanation
Source: Fatāwā Arkān al-Islām

❖ If a Person Leaves Immediately After ʿUmrah

  • Whoever comes to Makkah for ʿUmrah intending to depart immediately after completing ṭawāf, saʿī, and ḥalq/taqṣīr,
farewell ṭawāf is not obligatory for him.
  • His ṭawāf al-qudūm serves in place of ṭawāf al-wadāʿ.

❖ If a Person Stays in Makkah After ʿUmrah

  • If he remains in Makkah for a while after completing ʿUmrah, the stronger opinion is that farewell ṭawāf becomes wājib upon departure.

Evidences

① General Wording of the Prophet ﷺ

«لَا يَنْفِرَّ أَحَدٌ حَتَّىٰ يَكُونَ آخِرُ عَهْدِهِ بِالْبَيْتِ»
“No one should depart until his last act is at the House (Kaʿbah).”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Ḥajj, 1427)

  • The word "أَحَدٌ" (anyone) is indefinite and comes in the context of prohibition, indicating generality.
  • This includes anyone departing from Makkah.

② ʿUmrah Is Like Ḥajj

The Prophet ﷺ said:

«وَالْعُمْرَةُ هِيَ الْحَجُّ الْأَصْغَرُ»
“ʿUmrah is the lesser Ḥajj.”
(Sunan al-Dāraqutnī 2/285)

This is a well-known and accepted narration among the scholars.

③ Link Between Ḥajj and ʿUmrah

The Prophet ﷺ said:

«دَخَلَتِ الْعُمْرَةُ فِي الْحَجِّ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ»
“ʿUmrah has entered into Ḥajj until the Day of Resurrection.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, 1241)

④ Instruction to Yaʿlā ibn Umayyah (RA)

The Prophet ﷺ told him:

«اصْنَعْ فِي عُمْرَتِكَ مَا أَنْتَ صَانِعٌ فِي حَجِّكَ»
“Do in your ʿUmrah what you do in your Ḥajj.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1536, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1180)

  • This shows that the acts of Ḥajj and ʿUmrah are similar,
except for actions that are exclusively part of Ḥajj, like:
    • Standing at ʿArafah
    • Spending the night at Muzdalifah
    • Staying at Minā
    • Stoning the Jamārāt

Conclusion

  • If a person performs farewell ṭawāf after ʿUmrah, he has fulfilled his duty completely.
  • This approach is also the safest and most precautionary.
