Fajr Dua for Protection from Illnesses – Hadith Analysis

✦ Duʿāʾ After Fajr and Protection from Illnesses – Authentication of the Ḥadīth ✦

Source: Aḥkām wa Masāʾil fī Ḍawʾ al-Qurʾān wa al-Ḥadīth, Volume 01, Page 503

❖ The Question

In the magazine Ṣaḥīfah Ahl-e-Ḥadīth (published from Karachi), in the issue of Rabīʿ al-Awwal 1413 AH, a ḥadīth was printed. I started practicing upon it without investigating its authenticity. If possible, kindly provide research on it.

The content of the ḥadīth was that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever recites this supplication four times in a day will be protected from four diseases: blindness, leprosy, paralysis, and insanity.”

The supplication is:

سُبْحَانَ اﷲِ الْعَظِیْمِ وَبِحَمْدِہِ وَلاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّۃَ اِلاَّ بِاﷲِ

Name:
ʿAbdur-Raḥmān Ṭāhir, Sargodha

❖ The Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd:

This narration is found in Musnad Aḥmad (vol. 5, p. 60):

{ثَنَا یَزِیْدُ بْنُ ہَارُوْنَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ عَنْ أَبِیْ کَرِیْمَۃَ حَدَّثَنِیْ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَہْلِ الْبَصْرَۃِ عَنْ قَبِیْصَۃَ ابْنِ الْمُخَارِقِ قَالَ: اَتَیْتُ رَسُوْلَ اﷲِ صلی الله علیہ وسلم الحدیث، وَفِیْہِ: یَا قَبِیْصَۃُ إِذَا صَلَّیْتَ الْفَجْرَ فَقُلْ ثَلاَثًا: سُبْحَانَ اﷲِ الْعَظِیْمِ وَبِحَمْدِہِ تَعَافَی مِنَ الْعَمٰی وَالْجُذَامِ وَالْفَالِج۔}

Translation:
“I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ (the narration is lengthy) and in it the Prophet ﷺ said: O Qabīṣah! When you pray Fajr, recite three times: سُبْحَانَ اﷲِ الْعَظِیْمِ وَبِحَمْدِہِ. By this, you will be protected from blindness, leprosy, and paralysis.”

❖ Authentication of the Chain

① In this narration, there is a narrator ‘rajul min ahl al-Baṣrah’ (a man from Basrah) who is unknown (majhūl).

② If “al-Ḥasan” in the chain refers to al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī, then there is also a disconnection (inqiṭāʿ) between Yazīd ibn Hārūn and al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī, further weakening the chain.

❖ Conclusion

The narration about reciting this duʿāʾ after Fajr for protection from diseases is not authentic due to the weakness in its chain of transmission.
