Investigative Review of the Narration about Prophet Adam (AS) Supplicating through the Intercession of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
Taken from: Fatāwā ʿIlmiyyah, Volume 1, Kitāb al-ʿAqāʾid, Page 84
A narration mentions that Sayyidunā Ādam (علیہ السلام) supplicated through the intercession (waseelah) of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
(Al-Mustadrak by Al-Ḥākim 2/615 Ḥadīth 4228, Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwah by al-Bayhaqī 5/489)
Dr. Muhammad Tāhir al-Qādrī has cited this narration and written:
“Imām Ḥākim (رحمہ الله) classified this ḥadīth as ‘Ṣaḥīḥ al-Isnād’.
Imām al-Bayhaqī (رحمہ الله) also declared it authentic.”
(Al-Arbaʿīn fī Faḍāʾil al-Nabī al-Amīn, Page 55, 4th Edition, 2002)
Is it truly the case that Imām al-Bayhaqī (رحمہ الله) authenticated this narration?
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʿammā baʿd!
It is completely false to claim that Imām al-Bayhaqī (رحمہ الله) authenticated this narration.
In fact, Imām al-Bayhaqī (رحمہ الله) explicitly mentioned the weakness of this narration after quoting it:
“تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمٰنِ بْنُ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ، مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ، وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ”
“This narration is uniquely reported through ʿAbdur-Raḥmān ibn Zayd ibn Aslam in this form, and he is weak.”
(Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwah 5/489)
Hence, Dr. Tāhir al-Qādrī’s assertion that “Imām al-Bayhaqī also authenticated it” is a clear falsehood and a breach of scholarly integrity.
Imām al-Ḥākim (رحمہ الله) classified this narration as Ṣaḥīḥ al-Isnād, but this was refuted by Ḥāfiẓ al-Dhahabī (رحمہ الله) in Talkhīṣ al-Mustadrak, where he stated:
“بَلْ مَوْضُوع”
"Rather, it is fabricated."
This narration includes two narrators known for being extremely weak and even fabricating ḥadīths:
① ʿAbdur-Raḥmān ibn Zayd ibn Aslam – Classified by scholars of ḥadīth as weak and narrating Munkar (unacceptable) reports.
② ʿAbdullāh ibn Muslim al-Fahrī – Also a weak narrator.
Shaykh al-Albānī (رحمہ الله) has declared this narration fabricated in his research:
(Silsilat al-Aḥādīth al-Ḍaʿīfah wal-Mawḍūʿah 1/38, 47, Ḥadīth 25)
This narration is fabricated (mawḍūʿ) and has no Sharʿī authenticity.
Imām al-Bayhaqī (رحمہ الله) never authenticated it; rather, he clearly identified its weakness.
Ḥāfiẓ al-Dhahabī (رحمہ الله) and other scholars of ḥadīth have rejected this narration.
Dr. Tāhir al-Qādrī’s claim that this narration is authentic is false and a scholarly betrayal.
