Explanation of Preferred and Obligatory Actions for a Fasting Person

Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen (رحمۃاللہ علیہ)

Question:

What actions are preferable and obligatory for a fasting person?

Answer:
It is most suitable and preferred for a fasting person to engage in as many acts of obedience to Allah as possible and to avoid all prohibitions. Similarly, it is obligatory for them to uphold all obligations and abstain from all forbidden matters.

Therefore:
① The fasting person must perform the five daily prayers in congregation and at their prescribed times.
② They should avoid lying, backbiting, deceit, fraudulent practices, engaging in interest-based transactions, and all prohibited words and deeds.

The Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:

"Whoever does not abandon false speech and acting upon it, and ignorant behavior, Allah has no need for him to leave his food and drink."

(Authentic: Sahih Bukhari, Kitab Al-Adab, Chapter: The Command of Allah to Avoid False Speech, Hadith No. 6057, narrated by Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه)
