❖ Food Quantity in Expiation of Oaths (Kaffārah al-Yamīn) ❖
This writing is excerpted from the book "500 Questions and Answers for Women" based on the Fatwas of the Scholars of the Haramain, translated by Hafiz Abdullah Saleem.
We know that the expiation of an oath is to feed ten needy people. What is the required quantity of food for each needy person?
The expiation of an oath consists of:
◈ Feeding ten needy people,
◈ Or clothing them,
◈ Or freeing a slave.
If one is unable to do any of these, then one must fast for three consecutive days.
Regarding feeding:
The food should be of the type and quality that the person who made the oath normally feeds to his own children.
One of the following two options may be chosen:
① Feed ten needy persons, each one a full meal (either lunch or dinner), sufficient to satisfy them.
② Alternatively, give each needy person a single meal, consisting of half a sāʿ (i.e., approximately 1.5 kilograms) of staple food such as rice or wheat.
In the case of clothing, it is necessary to give each person at least enough clothing in which prayer can be validly performed.
