Evidence Regarding the Impurity of Madhī and Wadi

Published in: Shumara al-Sunnah, Jhelum

Answer:

Madhī (a thin fluid that emerges involuntarily from the urinary passage due to kissing or foreplay) and Wadi (a white, thick fluid that comes out after urination) are both impure. If they come into contact with the body or clothing, it is necessary to wash the affected area. Their discharge nullifies ablution (Wudu).

❶ Narration of Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib رضي الله عنه:

كنت رجلا مذاء وكنت أستحيي أن أسأل النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم لمكان ابنته فأمرت المقداد بن الأسود فسأله فقال: يغسل ذكره ويتوضأ
“I used to experience frequent discharge of Madhī. Due to my relation with the Prophet ﷺ (being his son-in-law), I felt shy to ask him directly, so I asked al-Miqdad bin al-Aswad رضي الله عنه to inquire on my behalf. The Prophet ﷺ replied: ‘He should wash his private part and perform ablution.’”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 269, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 303, wording by Muslim]

❷ Narration of Sayyiduna Sahl bin Ḥanīf

“I used to suffer a lot from Madhī and would often perform ghusl. I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it, and he replied: ‘Ablution is sufficient for that.’ I then asked: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what about what affects my clothes?’ He ﷺ said: ‘It is sufficient to take a handful of water and sprinkle it over the part of your garment you suspect it touched.’”
[Musnad Aḥmad: 4/485, Sunan Abī Dāwūd: 210, Sunan al-Tirmidhī: 115, Sunan Ibn Mājah: 506 — Hasan chain]
Imam al-Tirmidhī graded it as "Hasan Ṣaḥīḥ", and both Imams Ibn Khuzaymah (291) and Ibn Ḥibbān (1103) authenticated it.

❸ Narration of Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas رضي الله عنهما:

هو المني والمذي والودي فأما المذي والودي فإنه يغسل ذكره ويتوضأ وأما المني ، ففيه الغسل
“There are three types: Manī, Madhī, and Wadī. Regarding Madhī and Wadī, one should wash the private part and perform ablution. As for Manī, full ghusl is required.”
[Sharḥ Maʿānī al-Āthār by al-Ṭaḥāwī: 1/47 — Authentic chain]

Scholarly Consensus:

Ḥāfiẓ Nawawī رحمه الله (631–676 AH) writes:
أجمعت الأمه على نجاسة المذي والودي
“There is consensus among the Ummah on the impurity of Madhī and Wadi.”
[Al-Majmūʿ Sharḥ al-Muhadhdhab: 2/252]
