Evidence of Performing Tarawih After ‘Isha in Light of Hadith

Reference: Fatāwā Muḥammadiyyah, Vol. 1, p. 490

❖ Question

What is the proof from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that Tarawih prayer is to be performed after ‘Isha?

❖ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd:

◈ In Fatḥ al-Bārī (commentary of Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī), it is narrated from ʿĀ’ishah (رضي الله عنها):

خَرَجَ لَیْلَۃً مِنْ جَوْفِ اللَّیْلِ
(Fatḥ al-Bārī, Vol. 4, p. 220)

◈ In Abū Dāwūd, Tirmidhī, and Ibn Mājah it is reported with the words:

فَقَامَ بِنَا حَتّٰی ذَهَبَ ثُلُثُ اللَّیْلِ
(Mirʿāt al-Mafātīḥ, Vol. 6, p. 227)

These narrations show that on one occasion, the Prophet ﷺ led the companions in Qiyām Ramadan (Tarawih) during the first part of the night.

Furthermore, Tarawih is generally performed in the early part of the night after ‘Isha to make it easier for the congregation. If people were able to perform it in the last part of the night, that would indeed be more virtuous, but practically it is very difficult for the community.

✦ Conclusion

Thus, performing Tarawih after ‘Isha is authentically established from the practice of the Prophet ﷺ, and for the ease of the congregation this became the consistent practice.
