Evidence for Changing Place Before Offering Sunnah Prayers After Obligatory Salah
Taken from: Fatawa Arkan al-Islam
Is there any evidence that after performing an obligatory prayer, one should change their place before offering the Sunnah prayers?
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʾammā baʿd!
Yes, evidence for this is found in the noble Hadith narrated from ʿAmr ibn ʿAtāʾ from Muʿāwiyah رضي الله عنه, who reported:
«اَنَّ النَّبِیِ ﷺ أَمَرَنَا أَنْ لَا تُوصَلَ صَلَاةٌ بِصَلَاةٍ حَتَّى نَتَكَلَّمَ أَوْ نَخْرُجَ»
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Jumuʿah, Bāb aṣ-Ṣalāh baʿda al-Jumuʿah, ḥadīth no. 883)
“Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us not to join one prayer with another until we speak or leave (for another place).”
✿ Scholars have deduced from this Hadith that there should be a separation between the obligatory and Sunnah prayers.
✿ This separation can be done in two ways:
❀ By speaking briefly.
❀ By changing the place before starting the Sunnah prayer.
In other words, after performing the obligatory prayer, Sunnah prayers should not be offered at the same spot immediately. Instead, one should either engage in brief conversation or move to another place before beginning the Sunnah prayers.
