Guidelines for Women Attending the Mosque

Women should come to the mosque in a simple manner, without wearing perfume before entering. The following aḥādīth illustrate the manner in which women prayed in congregation during the time of the Prophet ﷺ.

Separation in Departure after Prayer

Narration from Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها
Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī narrated from Hind bint al-Ḥārith that Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها said:

When the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ concluded the prayer with salām, the women would immediately stand up to leave. The Prophet ﷺ would remain seated for a short while before standing. Ibn Shihāb said: I think — and Allāh knows best — that he stayed seated so that the women could depart before the men finished their prayer and caught up with them.
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Adhān, Bāb al-Taslīm, ḥadīth: 837)

In another narration, Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها said that the women would leave after the salām and reach their homes before the Prophet ﷺ and the men stood up.
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Adhān, Bāb Sukūt al-Imām fī Muṣallāhu Baʿd al-Salām, ḥadīth: 850)

Leaving in Early Morning Darkness

ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها narrated:

When the Prophet ﷺ performed Fajr prayer, the women would leave wrapped in their cloaks, unrecognisable due to the darkness.
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Adhān, Bāb Intiẓār al-Nās Qiyām al-Imām al-ʿĀlim, ḥadīth: 867)

In another narration, she said:

The Prophet ﷺ would lead Fajr in darkness, and the believing women would return without being recognised due to the darkness, or they could not recognise one another.
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, ḥadīth: 872)

Summary of Practice

  • Women would leave immediately after the prayer, while men stayed seated for a short time.
  • This ensured that women exited first and avoided intermingling.
  • They often attended Fajr in darkness, maintaining modesty and anonymity.

Prophetic Wisdom

Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها said:

The Prophet ﷺ would remain in his place briefly after salām so that the women could leave before the men reached them.
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Adhān, Bāb Ṣalāt al-Nisāʾ Khalf al-Rijāl, ḥadīth: 870)

Conclusion:
These narrations set the etiquette for women praying in the mosque — coming modestly without perfume, staying behind the men in rows, and leaving promptly after salām to maintain separation and modesty.
