Ethical Boundaries of Bidding and Trade in Islam

❖ Prohibited Practices in Buying and Selling

Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade certain behaviors in trade that violate the ethics of mutual respect and fairness:

✔ A city dweller should not act as an agent in selling goods for a desert dweller.
✔ One must not inflate prices falsely through deceptive bidding.
✔ A man should not intervene in a sale already agreed upon by his brother.
✔ No one should propose marriage to a woman who has already received a proposal.
✔ A woman should not ask for her sister’s divorce just to take her place.

❖ Understanding Key Terms

City Dweller for Desert Dweller:
This implies manipulating price advantage due to market awareness, which may harm the interests of buyers or sellers lacking such knowledge.

False Bidding (Najsh):
This act involves placing bids without intending to buy, purely to hike up the price and deceive potential buyers.

Overriding a Sale Agreement:
When a buyer is in the middle of a transaction, no third party should attempt to lure him away with a competing offer.

Interfering in a Marriage Proposal:
Islam prohibits trying to win over someone who is already considering or has accepted another’s marriage proposal.

Sister’s Divorce for Personal Gain:
Asking a man to divorce his wife so another woman can take her place is both unethical and a cause of potential family division.

❖ Moral Objectives Behind These Rulings

These guidelines serve multiple ethical purposes:

① Uphold justice in commercial and social dealings.
② Maintain trust and harmony within society.
③ Prevent greed, jealousy, and conflict.
④ Promote fairness and transparency in all forms of transactions.

❖ Summary

Islam lays great emphasis on ethical conduct in both personal and commercial affairs. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ’s teachings ensure that trade and interpersonal relationships are conducted with fairness, honesty, and mutual respect. Avoiding these prohibited actions is not only a matter of legal compliance but also a path to spiritual integrity and societal well-being.
