Some Essential Issues Related to Jihad

❀ Just as with every action, sincerity of intention (ikhlāṣ) is essential in jihad; otherwise even the first to enter Hellfire may be one who fought as a mujahid.

❀ The one who provides financial support to a mujahid is also a participant in jihad.

❀ Betrayal and treachery against Muslims are forbidden.

❀ It is permissible to bring women on an expedition for the purpose of caring for the sick or wounded.

❀ Women’s participation in jihad is likened to Hajj.

❀ When the Prophet ﷺ could not march at the start of the day for battle, he would wait for the sun to decline and for winds to arise, then after the prayer he would depart for jihad.

❀ During combat, adopting a manner of arrogance (khaylā’) toward the enemy is permissible.

❀ Where the signs of Islam (e.g., the adhān) become apparent, the Messenger ﷺ did not attack there; otherwise he would have attacked.

❀ One should not wish for combat with the enemy, but if battle occurs one must not retreat.

❀ It is permissible to desire martyrdom (shahādah).

❀ Angels cast their wings over a martyr.

❀ It is correct to ask Allah for offspring who will participate in jihad.

❀ It is lawful to send invitational letters (da‘watī) to disbelievers before fighting.
