Rights of the Prophet ﷺ upon the Ummah
❶ First Right: Faith in the Messenger ﷺ (Iman bil-Rasul)
[An-Nisā’: 136]
Translation:
"O you who believe! Believe in Allah and His Messenger and the Book which He has sent down upon His Messenger and the Scripture which He sent down before. And whoever disbelieves in Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Last Day has certainly gone far astray."
[Al-Ḥujurāt: 15]
Translation:
"Indeed, the believers are only those who believe in Allah and His Messenger."
❖ Hadith ①
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Īmān, ḥadīth: 126]
Translation:
Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"I have been commanded to fight the people until they testify that there is no deity worthy of worship but Allah, and believe in me and in what I have brought. If they do that, their blood and wealth are protected from me, except by right, and their reckoning is with Allah."
❖ Hadith ②
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Īmān, ḥadīth: 386]
Translation:
Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"By the One in Whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad! No one from this nation, Jew or Christian, hears about me and then dies without believing in what I was sent with, except that he will be among the inhabitants of the Fire."
❖ Hadith ③
[Musnad Aḥmad: 3712, Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān: 2372, Mustadrak Ḥākim: 1/509–510, etc.]
Translation:
ʿAbdullāh bin Masʿūd رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whenever a servant is afflicted with grief or sorrow and says:
‘O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is forever executed, and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every name belonging to You which You have named Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or kept with Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen, that You make the Qur’an the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the remover of my grief, and the reliever of my distress’
— then Allah will remove his sorrow and replace it with joy."
The companions asked: “O Messenger of Allah, should we not learn this?” He said: “Indeed! Whoever hears it should learn it.”
❖ Hadith ④
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Manāqib, ḥadīth: 3535]
Translation:
Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"My example and the example of the Prophets before me is like a man who built a house and made it beautiful and complete, except for a place of one brick in a corner. People went around it and admired it and said: Why has this brick not been placed? I am that brick, and I am the Seal of the Prophets."
❷ Second Right: Obedience to the Messenger ﷺ (Ta‘at al-Rasul)
[An-Nisā’: 80]
Translation:
“Whoever obeys the Messenger has indeed obeyed Allah.”
[Muḥammad: 33]
Translation:
“O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger, and do not render your deeds worthless.”
❖ Hadith ⑤
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 3344, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 2541]
Translation:
Abu Saʿīd al-Khudri رضي الله عنه reported: ʿAli رضي الله عنه sent gold to the Prophet ﷺ, who distributed it among four men: al-Aqraʿ ibn Hābis al-Ḥanẓali, ʿUyainah ibn Baḍr al-Fazāri, Zayd al-Ṭāʾī, and ʿAlqamah ibn ʿUlāthah al-ʿĀmirī.
The Quraysh and the Anṣār became upset and said: "He gives to the leaders of Najd and leaves us?"
The Prophet ﷺ replied: "I am drawing their hearts closer (to Islam)."
Then a man with sunken eyes, raised cheeks, a protruding forehead, thick beard, and shaven head approached and said, "O Muhammad! Fear Allah!"
The Prophet ﷺ replied: "If I disobey Allah, then who would obey Him? Allah has entrusted me with the people of the earth, yet you do not trust me?"
A man (believed to be Khālid ibn al-Walīd) asked for permission to kill him, but the Prophet ﷺ forbade it.
When the man left, the Prophet ﷺ said:
"From his descendants—or from his kind—there will come people who will recite the Qur’an, but it will not go beyond their throats. They will exit the religion just as an arrow passes through its target. They will kill the Muslims and spare the idolaters. If I live to see them, I will kill them like the people of ʿĀd were destroyed."
❖ Hadith ⑥
[Sunan Abū Dāwūd: 4604, Sunan Ibn Mājah: 12, Musnad Aḥmad: 17213 — graded ṣaḥīḥ by al-Albānī]
Translation:
Al-Miqdām ibn Maʿdīkarib رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"Indeed, I have been given the Qur’an and something similar to it along with it. Soon, a well-fed man reclining on his couch will say: 'Adhere only to the Qur’an. Whatever you find lawful in it, declare it lawful; and whatever you find unlawful in it, declare it unlawful.'"
❖ Hadith ⑦
[Musnad Aḥmad: 5551, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Imārah: 4793]
Translation:
I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
"Whoever withdraws his hand from obedience (to the legitimate Muslim authority) will come on the Day of Resurrection with no proof (to save him), and whoever dies without having pledged allegiance (to the Muslim ruler) dies a death of the pre-Islamic ignorance (Jāhiliyyah)."
❖ Hadith ⑧
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 7280]
Translation:
Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"All of my ummah will enter Paradise except those who refuse."
They asked, “O Messenger of Allah! Who would refuse?”
He said: "Whoever obeys me will enter Paradise, and whoever disobeys me has refused."
❸ Third Right: Following the Messenger ﷺ (Ittibāʿ al-Rasul)
[Āl ʿImrān: 31]
Translation:
Say, “If you love Allah, then follow me, and Allah will love you and forgive your sins.”
[Al-Aʿrāf: 158]
Translation:
“And follow him so that you may be rightly guided.”
[Al-Aʿrāf: 157]
Translation:
"Those who follow the Messenger—the unlettered Prophet—whom they find written in the Torah and the Gospel with them."
❖ Hadith ⑨
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 4981, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 239]
Translation:
Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:
"There was no Prophet among the Prophets except that he was given signs which caused people to believe in him. What I have been given is revelation which Allah has revealed to me. So I hope that I will have the most followers among them on the Day of Resurrection."
❖ Hadith ⑩
[Sunan Ibn Mājah: 316, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 262]
Translation:
Some polytheists mockingly said to him: “Indeed, your companion (i.e., Muhammad ﷺ) teaches you everything—even how to relieve yourselves!”
He replied: “Indeed! He forbade us from facing the qiblah when relieving ourselves, from cleaning ourselves with our right hand, and from using less than three stones, or using dung or bones."
❖ Hadith ⑪
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Iʿtiṣām bil-Kitāb wa al-Sunnah, Bāb: al-Iqtidāʾ bi-Aʿmāl al-Nabī ﷺ, ḥadīth: 7298]
Translation:
Ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنه narrated: The Prophet ﷺ made a gold ring, and so the people made gold rings too. The Prophet ﷺ said, “I made a ring of gold,” and then he threw it away and said, “I shall never wear it.” So the people threw their rings away.
❖ Hadith ⑫
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Ḥajj, Bāb: Mā Dhukira fī al-Ḥajar al-Aswad, ḥadīth: 1597]
Translation:
ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله عنه came to the Black Stone and kissed it, then said: “Verily, I know that you are only a stone and can neither harm nor benefit. Had I not seen the Prophet ﷺ kiss you, I would not have kissed you.”
❹ Fourth Right: Referring to the Messenger ﷺ in Disputes
Allah Almighty said:
[An-Nisāʾ: 59]
Translation:
“If you differ in anything, then refer it to Allah and the Messenger.”
Allah Almighty also said:
[An-Nisāʾ: 65]
Translation:
“But no, by your Lord, they will not truly believe until they make you [O Prophet] judge in their disputes, then find in themselves no discomfort concerning what you have decided, and submit fully.”
❖ Hadith ⑬
[Sunan Abī Dāwūd, Kitāb al-Sunnah, ḥadīth: 4607 – graded ṣaḥīḥ by al-Albānī]
Translation:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once led us in prayer, then turned to us and gave us an eloquent sermon that caused our eyes to shed tears and our hearts to tremble.
Someone said, “O Messenger of Allah! It seems this is the farewell sermon. What do you command us?”
He ﷺ said:
“I advise you to fear Allah, and to hear and obey—even if a black slave is appointed as your leader. Whoever among you lives after me will see great differences. So adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly-guided caliphs. Hold on to it firmly with your molar teeth. Beware of newly invented matters, for every innovation is misguidance.”
❖ Hadith ⑭
[Sunan Abī Dāwūd: 2894, Ibn Mājah: 2824]
Translation:
A grandmother came to Abu Bakr al-Ṣiddīq رضي الله عنه asking for her inheritance.
He replied: “You have nothing in the Book of Allah, and I am not aware of anything in the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in this regard. Return until I inquire.”
He asked the people, and al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah said: “I was present when the Prophet ﷺ gave the grandmother one-sixth.”
Abu Bakr then asked, “Is there anyone else with you?”
Muḥammad ibn Maslamah stood and confirmed what al-Mughīrah had said.
So Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه granted her one-sixth.
❖ Hadith ⑮
[Sunan Ibn Mājah: 2642, Abū Dāwūd: 2927, al-Tirmidhī: 1415 – graded ṣaḥīḥ by al-Albānī]
Translation:
Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib reported:
ʿUmar رضي الله عنه used to say: "Blood money (diyah) is for the male relatives ('āqilah), and a wife does not inherit any share from her husband’s blood money."
Then Ḍaḥḥāk ibn Sufyān informed him:
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote to me that I should give a share of the blood money of Ashyam al-Ḍaḍābī to his wife."
Thereupon, ʿUmar retracted his earlier position.
❖ Hadith ⑯
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Ṣiyām, ḥadīth: 2589]
Translation:
Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه used to say: “Whoever is overtaken by dawn in a state of janābah (major impurity) should not fast.”
ʿAbdur-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥārith informed his father, who denied it.
So ʿAbdur-Raḥmān went along with Abū Bakr ibn ʿAbdur-Raḥmān to ʿĀʾishah and Umm Salamah رضي الله عنهما and asked them.
They both said: “The Prophet ﷺ would begin the day in a state of janābah not due to a wet dream and still fast.”
They then went to Marwān who told them to confront Abū Hurairah.
When confronted, Abū Hurairah said: “Did they both say this?”
He was told: “Yes.”
He replied: “They know better.”
Then he retracted and said: “I heard that from al-Faḍl ibn ʿAbbās, not directly from the Prophet ﷺ.”
❺ Fifth Right: The Messenger ﷺ Must Not Be Opposed in Any Matter
Allah Almighty said:
[An-Nūr: 63]
Translation:
"Do not make the calling of the Messenger among you like your calling of one another. Allah certainly knows those who slip away among you under cover. So let those beware who oppose his command, lest a trial afflict them or a painful punishment befall them."
❖ Hadith ⑰
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Ashriba, ḥadīth: 2021]
Translation:
Iyās ibn Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ reported from his father:
A man was eating with his left hand in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
The Prophet ﷺ said, “Eat with your right hand.”
The man said, “I cannot.”
The Prophet ﷺ replied, “May you not be able to,” for nothing prevented him except pride.
And the narrator said: The man was never able to raise his hand to his mouth again.
❖ Hadith ⑱
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb Manāqib al-Anṣār, ḥadīth: 3853; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Masājid, ḥadīth: 1297]
Translation:
The Prophet ﷺ recited Sūrat al-Najm and then performed a prostration, and no one remained except that they prostrated,
except for one man who took a handful of pebbles and prostrated on them,
saying, “This is sufficient for me.”
Later, I saw that man killed as a disbeliever in Allah.
❖ Hadith ⑲
[Sunan Ibn Mājah, Kitāb al-Fitan, Bāb al-ʿUqūbāt, ḥadīth: 4019; al-Silsilah al-Ṣaḥīḥah, no. 106]
Translation:
ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“O Emigrants! There are five things which, if your people are afflicted with them—and I seek refuge with Allah lest you live to see them:
① Immorality never appears among a people to the extent they practice it openly except that plagues and diseases never seen before appear among them.
② They do not cheat in weights and measures except that they are stricken with famine, hardship, and the oppression of rulers.
③ They do not withhold zakāh except that rain is withheld from the sky; were it not for the animals, they would receive no rain.
④ They do not break the covenant of Allah and His Messenger except that Allah enables an enemy to overpower them and take some of what is in their hands.
⑤ And as long as their rulers do not judge by what Allah has revealed and choose other laws, Allah will cause internal division and conflict among them.”
❖ Hadith ⑳
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Ṣalāh, Bāb Khurūj al-Nisāʾ ilā al-Masājid, ḥadīth: 442]
Translation:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Allow women to go to the mosques at night.”
His son, named Wāqid, said: “They will use it as a means of mischief.”
Ibn ʿUmar struck him on the chest and said: “I am telling you what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, and you say, ‘No’?!”
❻ Sixth Right: Abandoning Innovations (Bidʿah)
Allah Almighty said:
[Āl ʿImrān: 85]
Translation:
"And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam—it will never be accepted of him, and he will be among the losers in the Hereafter."
Allah Almighty also said:
[Al-Māʾidah: 3]
Translation:
"This day I have perfected for you your religion, and completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion."
❖ Hadith ㉑
[Musnad Aḥmad: 4/126, Sunan Abī Dāwūd: 4607, Sunan al-Tirmidhī: 2676, Sunan Ibn Mājah: 42 – declared authentic by al-Albānī]
Translation:
One day, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in prayer. Then he turned towards us and gave us an emotional sermon that caused our eyes to weep and hearts to tremble.
A man said, “O Messenger of Allah! It seems this is the sermon of someone bidding farewell. So advise us.”
He ﷺ said:
"I advise you to fear Allah, and to hear and obey [your leaders], even if a slave from Abyssinia is appointed over you.
For whoever lives after me will see great differences. So you must adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs—cling to it firmly with your molars.
