Envy as a Cause of Cutting Ties

❖ Question:
Does envy (ḥasad) become a cause of cutting ties?
❖ Answer:
Yes!
Envy does become a cause of severing relations. It is narrated from Sayyidunā Anas رضي الله عنه that indeed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
«لا تباغضوا، ولا تحاسدوا، وتدابروا، وكونوا عباد الله إخوانا، ولا يحل لمسلم أن يهجر أخاه فوق تلاث ليال »
“Do not hold hatred among yourselves, nor envy one another, nor turn your backs on each other. Be, O servants of Allah, brothers to one another. It is not permissible for a Muslim to cut off relations with his brother for more than three nights.”
