Engaging in Music and Using It for Treatment: An Islamic Ruling

Authored by: Dr. Muhammad Zia ur-Rahman Azmi رحمه الله

✔ Ruling:

Engaging in or enjoying music, whether it includes singing or not, is haram.
If accompanied by singing, its harm is even greater, leading to moral and natural corruption.
As for the claim that some scholars were highly skilled in music, it refers to individuals like Al-Farabi, who had no connection with Islamic piety or adherence. Such individuals are not authoritative figures for Muslims, unlike the Rightly Guided Caliphs, Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, Hasan al-Basri, Imam Shafi‘i, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Al-Awza‘i, and others—true role models in knowledge and practice.
Regarding using music as a form of treatment, this too is not permissible.
A Muslim should instead seek spiritual relief through:
Islamic anthems (nasheeds) sung in a good voice,
Listening to the recitation of the Qur'an,
→ These bring peace to the nerves, tranquility to the soul, and strengthen belief in Allah and His decree.
