Employment in Banks

Authored by: Al-Sheikh Mubashir Ahmad Rabbani (Hafizahullah)

Question:

What is the ruling on working in banks according to Islamic teachings?

Answer:

Working in a bank is haram.

It is narrated by Sayyiduna Jabir (RA):

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed the one who consumes interest, the one who gives it, the one who records it, and the witnesses to it, and said: ‘They are all equally sinful.’"

[Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Musaqat: The Chapter on Cursing the One Who Engages in Interest (1598)]

This Hadith clearly indicates that even the one who records interest transactions is subject to the curse of Allah, and he is equally sinful as the one who consumes or facilitates interest. Therefore, working in banks, whether as a clerk, manager, or in any other role associated with interest-based dealings, is haram.

Collaborating with those who deal in interest essentially amounts to participating in a war against Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. Hence, one should leave such employment and seek a lawful and halal means of livelihood.

Conclusion:

Muslims are encouraged to refrain from bank-related jobs and pursue careers that do not involve interest-based dealings to ensure compliance with Islamic teachings.
