Emotional Talk After Nikah and the Ruling on Ghusl

❖ Question:

I live in Europe and got married over the phone some time ago. The consummation (rukhsati) is scheduled for next year. We communicate via Skype, and one day, our conversation became emotionally arousing. Is it permissible to engage in such emotional talk with my wife before consummation? Also, if madhy (pre-ejaculate) is discharged during such interaction, is ghusl obligatory? What is the difference between mani (semen) and madhy (pre-ejaculate)?

❖ Answer:

Once Nikah (marriage contract) is completed, she is legally your wife according to Shari‘ah.
Therefore, there is no harm in having any form of conversation with her, including emotionally expressive or romantic talk.

❖ Ruling on Ghusl Due to Discharge of Madhy:

If madhy (pre-ejaculate) is discharged, ghusl is not obligatory.
However, one must perform istinja (cleansing of the private parts) and wudu (ablution).

❖ Difference Between Mani and Madhy:

According to the Lajnah Da’imah (Permanent Committee of Scholars), the difference is as follows:

Mani (semen):
  • A thick fluid that exits the body with force and is accompanied by a sense of pleasure.
  • The individual often feels physical weakness afterward.
  • Ghusl becomes obligatory upon its release.

Madhy (pre-ejaculate):
  • A thin, sticky, white fluid that may be released without force, often during foreplay or arousing thoughts.
  • It is not accompanied by a sense of release or weakness.
  • Ghusl is not obligatory, but wudu and cleansing the area are required.

❖ Conclusion:

✔ Emotional or romantic talk with your wife before rukhsati is permissible after a valid Nikah.
✔ If madhy is discharged, ghusl is not required, but wudu and istinja must be done.
✔ If mani is discharged, then ghusl becomes obligatory due to the conditions mentioned.
