Eight Statements from Tābiʿīn on Reciting Fātiḥah Behind the Imām

◈ The Practice of the Tābiʿīn Regarding Recitation of Sūrah al-Fātiḥah Behind the Imām in Both Audible and Silent Prayers ◈
Excerpted from the book “Fātiḥah Khalf al-Imām” by Shaykh Badīʿ al-Dīn Shāh al-Rāshdī

Narrations from the Tābiʿīn (Successors of the Companions) ❖

① Saʿīd ibn Jubayr رحمه الله

Source: Juzʾ al-Qirāʾah of Imām al-Bukhārī, p. 62

ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUthmān ibn Khaytham reports: I asked Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, "Should I recite behind the Imām?" He said, "Yes, even if you are hearing his recitation. These people have introduced a new practice. The way of the Salaf (pious predecessors) was that the Imām would say takbīr and then remain silent until he assumed those behind him had recited Sūrah al-Fātiḥah. Then the Imām would begin reciting and the followers would remain silent."

✦ This shows that the Salaf used to recite Sūrah al-Fātiḥah behind the Imām, and the Imām would pause briefly to allow this. The current practice of continuous recitation without a pause is a later innovation.

② Imām Makḥūl رحمه الله

Source: Abū Dāwūd, p. 127

Makḥūl, a prominent Syrian Tābiʿī, used to recite Sūrah al-Fātiḥah silently in each rakʿah of Maghrib, ʿIshāʾ, and Fajr. He would say:
"Recite Sūrah al-Fātiḥah in every audible prayer. If the Imām pauses, then recite during the pause. If he does not pause, then recite before him, with him, or after him. Do not abandon it under any circumstance."

③ ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr رحمه الله

Source: Juzʾ al-Qirāʾah of al-Bukhārī, pp. 62–63

Hishām reports from his father, ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr, who said:
"O my son! Recite during the silence of the Imām, and remain silent when he recites aloud. No prayer is complete without Sūrah al-Fātiḥah—whether it is obligatory or voluntary."

✦ This emphasizes the necessity of reciting Sūrah al-Fātiḥah in all types of prayer, while observing silence during the Imām’s audible recitation.

④ Abū Salamah رحمه الله

Source: Juzʾ al-Qirāʾah of al-Bukhārī, p. 62

Abū Salamah said:
"The Imām has two pauses — take advantage of them to recite Sūrah al-Fātiḥah."

✦ These two pauses refer to:
① After takbīr, before starting recitation — to allow followers to recite.
② After finishing recitation, before saying takbīr for rukūʿ — also a moment for followers to recite.

⑤ Ḥasan al-Baṣrī رحمه الله

Sources: Muṣannaf Ibn Abī Shaybah, Vol. 1, p. 374;
Al-Tamhīd by Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr, Vol. 1, p. 40

Ḥasan al-Baṣrī said:
"Recite Sūrah al-Fātiḥah in every rakʿah behind the Imām, silently."

And in another narration:
"Recite Sūrah al-Fātiḥah whether the Imām recites audibly or silently. In audible prayers, recite it after the Imām finishes his recitation of al-Fātiḥah."

⑥ ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Rabāḥ رحمه الله

Sources: Muṣannaf ʿAbd al-Razzāq, Vol. 2, p. 133;
Juzʾ al-Qirāʾah of al-Bukhārī, p. 631

ʿAṭāʾ said:
"If the Imām recites aloud, then either recite Sūrah al-Fātiḥah before his recitation or after he pauses. But when he recites, remain silent — just as Allah has commanded."

✦ This aligns with the command to listen during Qur’anic recitation but shows that Sūrah al-Fātiḥah should still be recited.

⑦ Mujāhid ibn Jabr رحمه الله

Source: Juzʾ al-Qirāʾah of al-Bukhārī, p. 10

Mujāhid said:
"Whoever does not recite Sūrah al-Fātiḥah behind the Imām must repeat the prayer."

✦ This is a clear and strong view on the obligation of reciting Sūrah al-Fātiḥah, even behind the Imām.

⑧ ʿĀmir al-Shaʿbī رحمه الله

Source: Al-Thiqāt by Ibn Ḥibbān, Vol. 6, p. 39

Imām al-Shaʿbī said:
"Reciting behind the Imām in Ẓuhr and ʿAṣr is the light of the prayer."

✦ Despite being silent prayers, recitation behind the Imām is emphasized and described as enlightening the ṣalāh.

❖ Additional Reports Supporting This View ❖

Imām al-Bukhārī states in Juzʾ al-Qirāʾah:

"Al-Ḥasan, Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, Maymūn ibn Mihrān, and countless others among the Tābiʿīn and scholars said that one should recite behind the Imām, even if the Imām is reciting aloud. Even ʿĀʾishah (RA) instructed people to recite behind the Imām."
(Juzʾ al-Qirāʾah, p. 10)

Also:

"Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, ʿUrwah, al-Shaʿbī, ʿUbaydullāh ibn ʿAbdullāh, Nāfiʿ ibn Jubayr, Abū al-Malīḥ, al-Qāsim ibn Muḥammad, Abū Majliz, Makḥūl, Mālik ibn ʿAwn, and Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿArūbah — all were of the opinion that the follower should recite."
(Juzʾ al-Qirāʾah, Delhi ed. p. 7)

✅ Conclusion:

These eight reports from the Tābiʿīn, supported by numerous additional statements from scholars and the Ṣaḥābah, clearly establish the permissibility and virtue of reciting Sūrah al-Fātiḥah behind the Imām, even in audible prayers. It is seen as a foundational and illuminating element of ṣalāh.

Muslims should not remain in doubt after such overwhelming evidence. Even though some people present counterarguments, they are usually not supported by strong evidence or the practice of the Salaf.
