❀ Question
A man is married and has children, but he has a severe weakness: he repeatedly falls into the sin of zina (fornication/adultery) despite performing the five daily prayers and having interest in Islamic knowledge.
He tries repeatedly to give up this major sin but fails. He seeks guidance for an act or method that will help him permanently free himself from this grave sin.
❀ Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!
Such a person should be advised with the following steps to protect himself from this heinous sin:
➊ Prevention through Qur’ān and Ḥadīth
◈ Remind him of the verses of the Qur’ān and aḥādīth that prohibit zina, so that the fear of Allah settles in his heart.
◈ Warn him of the severe punishment of Hellfire so he realizes the gravity of this sin.
➋ Encouraging Reflection
◈ Remind him that every woman he commits zina with is someone’s daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, or niece.
◈ Ask him:
"Would you tolerate someone committing zina with your daughter, sister, wife, or mother?"
If he cannot tolerate this for himself, then he should never dare to dishonor the dignity of others.
➌ Guidance from the Ḥadīth of the Prophet ﷺ
The Prophet ﷺ said:
«لاَ يُؤْمِنُ أَحَدُکُمْ حَتّٰی يُحِبَّ لِأَخِيْهِ مَا يُحِبُّ لِنَفْسِه»
(Muttafaqun ʿalayh, Mishkāt, Kitāb al-Adab, Bāb al-Shafaqah wa al-Raḥmah ʿala al-Khalq)
"None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself."
This ḥadīth clearly teaches that true faith requires respecting the rights and honor of others.
➍ Dhikr and Spiritual Remedies
◈ Regularly recite:
«لاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللّٰهِ»
◈ This blessed phrase is a tried and tested means of protection from evil and attaining steadfastness upon righteousness.
❀ Conclusion
✿ Protection from zina requires fear of Allah, constant reflection on the rights and dignity of others, and holding fast to remembrance of Allah.
✿ Continuous repentance, coupled with sincere effort to avoid situations of temptation, is essential.
✿ True īmān pushes a believer to avoid harming others just as he does not wish harm upon himself or his family.
