❀ Question:
What is the ruling on a person who says that persistence in sins does not harm faith?
❀ Answer:
According to Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama‘ah, faith increases with good deeds and decreases by committing sins or neglecting good deeds. Whoever believes that sins do not harm faith is a Murji’.
❀ Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله (d. 728H) said:
من ظن أن الذنوب لا تضر من أصر عليها فهو ضال مخالف للكتاب والسنة وإجماع السلف والأئمة
“Whoever thinks that persistence in sins does not cause harm (to faith) is misguided and in opposition to the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and the consensus of the Salaf and the Imams.”
