◈ Eating Before Eid al-Fitr Prayer: A Confirmed Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ ◈

✔ Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ:
Narrated by Anas bin Malik
(Sahih al-Bukhari: 953)
Translation: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not go out on the day of Eid al-Fitr until he had eaten some dates, and he would eat them in odd numbers."
This Hadith establishes that eating before Eid prayer on Eid al-Fitr is a confirmed Sunnah, and the Prophet ﷺ would specifically eat dates in odd numbers (e.g., 3, 5, 7).
✔ Another Supporting Hadith:
Narrated by Buraidah
(Sunan al-Tirmidhi: 542, Sunan Ibn Majah: 1756, Sahih Ibn Hibban: 2815)
Translation: "The Prophet ﷺ would not go out on the day of Eid al-Fitr until he had eaten something, and he would not eat on the day of Eid al-Adha until he had returned and eaten from his sacrifice."
This Hadith clarifies that eating before the Eid al-Fitr prayer is a Sunnah Mu’akkadah, while for Eid al-Adha, delaying food until after the sacrifice is preferred.
The entire body of the Companions and Tabi‘in agreed upon the practice of eating before the Eid al-Fitr prayer.
Abdullah ibn Umar, Ali ibn Abi Talib, and others are also reported to have adhered to this Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.
Therefore, this act is not only the Prophet’s ﷺ Sunnah but also the consistent and accepted practice of the noble Companions.
The primary objective is to break the fast and signify the end of Ramadan by eating something before prayer.
If dates are unavailable, then any sweet or light food may be eaten.
Imam Ibn Qudamah رحمه الله states:
"If one does not have dates, he may eat something else, because the objective is to discontinue fasting."
(Al-Mughni, Vol. 2, p. 229)
Therefore, if dates are not available, it is perfectly acceptable to eat milk, honey, or any other suitable sweet food.
If one forgets, there is no sin upon him.
However, deliberately abandoning a Sunnah Mu’akkadah is inappropriate and results in the loss of great reward.
Imam al-Nawawi رحمه الله states:
"It is recommended that one eats before the Eid al-Fitr prayer, in adherence to the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ."
(Al-Majmu‘ Sharh al-Muhadhdhab, Vol. 5, p. 5)
Hence, those who intentionally abandon this Sunnah deprive themselves of a noble reward.
Eating before the Eid al-Fitr prayer is a confirmed Sunnah (Sunnah Mu’akkadah).
The Prophet ﷺ typically ate dates in odd numbers.
If dates are not available, any sweet or light food may be eaten.
On Eid al-Adha, it is preferable to eat after the prayer and after the sacrifice.
Deliberate neglect of this Sunnah is discouraged, though forgetfulness is excused.
Therefore, every Muslim should strive to eat something before attending the Eid al-Fitr prayer in order to act upon the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and attain its spiritual reward.
