Earnings from a Job Obtained Through Bribery: Halal or Haram in Islam?

Sharʿi Ruling on Earnings from a Job Obtained Through Bribery

Taken from: Aḥkām wa Masāʾil, Masāʾil al-Buyūʿ, vol.1, p.393

❖ The Question

If a person secures a job by giving a bribe, will his earnings from that job be ḥalāl or ḥarām?

❖ The Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd:

  • If the nature of the job itself is Sharʿan permissible, meaning it is a lawful occupation according to Islamic principles and does not involve any ḥarām work, then the salary earned from that job will be ḥalāl and permissible.
  • However, if the work itself is ḥarām or impermissible, then the income derived from it will also be ḥarām.

⚠️ It must be clearly understood that both giving and taking bribes are strictly ḥarām in every situation, regardless of the outcome.
