❖ Question
Is there any specific du‘a in Shari‘ah for marriage of one’s choice? If yes, please provide authentic references.
❖ Answer
Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ‘ala Rasulillah, amma ba’d!
No Specific Du‘a Proven
- Marriage is a blessed Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, and it is permissible to pray for fulfilling this Sunnah.
- However, no specific du‘a for marriage of choice is proven from any authentic hadith or reliable Islamic book.
- One may make du‘a in any language, in their own words, asking Allah for a righteous and pious spouse — this is both permissible and recommended.
Give Priority to Piety
- In seeking a marriage partner, personal liking should not be the only criterion.
- Piety and religiosity must be given priority, as the Prophet ﷺ instructed.
Shari‘ah Method for Proceeding with Marriage of Choice
If a man or woman desires to marry someone of their choice:
- Follow the Shari‘ah-compliant process.
- Offer two units (rak‘ah) of nafl prayer.
- Perform istikharah, seeking Allah’s guidance on whether this proposal is good for one’s worldly and eternal life.
The du‘a of istikharah from the Prophet ﷺ includes asking for the best in both worlds.
Conclusion
- No specific du‘a from Qur’an or Hadith is prescribed for marriage of choice.
- Personal du‘a is allowed and encouraged.
- The best approach is to perform istikharah and ask Allah for goodness and blessing, while prioritizing a spouse’s piety over mere personal liking.
