❖ Shar‘i Ruling on Making Duʿāʾ After Nikāḥ ❖
✍ Response by: Shaykh Abdul Wakeel Nasir ḥafiẓahullāh
Is it permissible to make duʿāʾ after conducting a nikāḥ (marriage)?
It is established from the Prophet ﷺ that he would supplicate for the newlyweds.
Narrated by Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه:
The Prophet ﷺ would offer this duʿāʾ as a congratulatory prayer
"بَارَكَ اللَّهُ لَكَ وَبَارَكَ عَلَيْكَ وَجَمَعَ بَيْنَكُمَا فِي خَيْرٍ"
“May Allah bless you, shower His blessings upon you, and unite you both in goodness.”
Sunan Abī Dāwūd: 2130
Making duʿāʾ after nikāḥ, whether individually or collectively, is permissible,
BUT it should not be treated as Sunnah.
✔ Since nikāḥ is a joyful event, duʿāʾ can be made based on local custom (‘urf).
✔ However, it should not be formalized as a ritual or considered an essential part of the ceremony.
➤ Do not make it an obligation:
Nikāḥ is a sacred religious act, and it should not be turned into a cultural or ceremonial show.
➤ Duʿāʾ is permissible as ‘urf (custom):
There is flexibility in making duʿāʾ on such occasions, provided it is not deemed necessary or prescribed.
Ḥāfiẓ Ṣalāḥuddīn Yūsuf رحمه الله has also mentioned:
Duʿāʾ after nikāḥ may be done as a customary practice, but it should not be regarded as a Shar‘i obligation or Sunnah.
◈ The Sunnah duʿāʾ at the time of nikāḥ is:
"بَارَكَ اللَّهُ لَكَ وَبَارَكَ عَلَيْكَ..."
◈ Making an individual or collective duʿāʾ is permissible, but it should not be treated as a Sunnah or obligatory act.
◈ Duʿāʾ at happy occasions is recommended (mustaḥabb), but not required.
