Dragging One’s Garment on the Ground Out of Arrogance is a Major Sin

Hadith Reference:

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Umar (رضي الله عنهما) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
"Whoever drags his garment out of arrogance, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Judgment."

Umm Salamah (رضي الله عنها) asked:
"O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), what should women do with the hems of their garments?"

He (ﷺ) replied:
"They may lower them by one hand span."

She said:
"But their feet would still be exposed."

The Prophet (ﷺ) responded:
"Then they may extend them by one forearm’s length, but no more than that."

Key Lessons from This Hadith:

It is a major sin to intentionally drag one's garment on the ground out of arrogance.

  • The Prophet (ﷺ) strongly warned against this, stating that Allah will not look at such a person on the Day of Judgment.
  • This applies to trousers, thobes, or any other lower garment.
  • Arrogance belongs only to Allah—those who display it risk severe consequences in the Hereafter.
Women are allowed to extend their garments for the sake of modesty.

  • The Prophet (ﷺ) permitted women to lengthen their clothing by one hand span (about 9 inches) to ensure proper covering.
  • If more coverage is needed, they may extend it by one forearm’s length (approximately 18 inches), but not beyond that.
  • This ruling is to maintain the modesty of women and prevent their feet from being exposed.
Long garments worn by women for the purpose of modesty are permissible.

  • If women’s clothes, veils, or shawls slightly drag on the ground for the purpose of covering the body, it is not sinful.
  • However, if women wear long clothing out of pride or arrogance, they will also be accountable just like men.
One must avoid pride and arrogance in their clothing.

  • Wearing fine clothes is not prohibited in Islam, but wearing them with arrogance is condemned.
  • Humility is an essential virtue that every believer must uphold.
