Fasting during Ramadan is a deeply spiritual act of worship, and its validity can be affected by certain physical occurrences—vomiting (قے) being one of them. The rulings differ depending on whether the vomiting is intentional or involuntary.
➊ ❀ Vomiting Intentionally
◈ If a person induces vomiting deliberately (e.g., by inserting fingers in the throat or forcing oneself to vomit),
➤ The fast becomes invalid,
➤ And qadhā’ (making up the fast) is obligatory.
➋ ❀ Involuntary Vomiting
◈ If vomiting occurs naturally, without any deliberate effort or intention (due to illness, nausea, or any uncontrollable reaction),
➤ The fast remains valid,
➤ No qadhā’ is required.
➌ ❀ Hadith-Based Evidence
Narrated by Abū Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه), the Prophet ﷺ said:
«مَنْ ذَرَعَهُ الْقَيْءُ فَلَا قَضَاءَ عَلَيْهِ، وَمَنِ اسْتَقَاءَ عَمْدًا فَلْيَقْضِ»
(Sunan Abī Dāwūd, Ḥadīth: 2380; Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī, Ḥadīth: 720)
Translation:
“Whoever is overcome by vomiting (i.e., involuntarily), there is no qadhā’ upon him,
and whoever vomits deliberately, he must make up the fast.”
➍ What Should Be Done If Vomiting Overwhelms a Person?
✔ If one feels the urge to vomit and is unable to prevent it, and there is a risk of stomach contents exiting:
❖ Do not resist it forcefully,
❖ Do not induce it intentionally,
❖ Do not try to swallow it back,
❖ Let the body react naturally.

⚠ Trying to suppress vomiting may cause unnecessary harm, so it is better to let it occur naturally.
✔ Conclusion:
Type of Vomiting | Does It Break the Fast? | Qadhā’ Required? |
---|---|---|
![]() | No | No |
![]() | Yes | Yes |
