❖ Common Concern During Ramadan

Many people wonder during the blessed month of Ramadan:
“Does using toothpaste while fasting break the fast?”

This question is answered here in detail using Qur’anic guidance, authentic Hadith, Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh), and even scientific analysis, to clarify whether the use of toothpaste is allowed while fasting.

❖ In the Light of the Qur’an

Allah ﷻ says:

"وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا حَتَّىٰ يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الْأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الْأَسْوَدِ مِنَ الْفَجْرِ ۖ ثُمَّ أَتِمُّوا الصِّيَامَ إِلَى اللَّيْلِ"
(Sūrah al-Baqarah 2:187)

Translation:

“Eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread (of night). Then complete the fast until nightfall.”

In this verse, eating and drinking are mentioned as actions that break the fast. If one uses toothpaste and ensures nothing reaches the throat, it does not fall under eating or drinking.

❖ In the Light of Hadith

Use of Miswak by the Prophet ﷺ
The Prophet ﷺ used miswak while fasting:

"The Prophet ﷺ used miswak while fasting."
(Sunan Abū Dāwūd, Ḥadīth: 2365)

This Hadith indicates that oral hygiene during fasting is permissible.

Avoiding Substances Reaching the Throat

The Prophet ﷺ advised caution in this matter:

"When performing ablution, rinse your nose thoroughly, unless you are fasting."
(Sunan Abū Dāwūd, Ḥadīth: 2366)

This Hadith highlights the importance of avoiding anything that might reach the throat during fasting.

❖ In the Light of Fiqh (Islamic Jurisprudence)

(1) Ḥanafī School

◈ If toothpaste foam or its components reach the throat, the fast is invalidated.
◈ If the mouth is rinsed thoroughly and nothing is swallowed, the fast remains valid.

(2) Shāfiʿī School

◈ Swallowing even the taste or foam of toothpaste breaks the fast.
◈ Rinsing only, without swallowing, does not invalidate the fast.

(3) Mālikī and Ḥanbalī Schools

◈ Any substance that reaches the throat, even during oral cleansing, breaks the fast.
◈ If nothing enters the throat, the fast remains intact.

General Principles from the Jurists

Miswak and toothpaste differ — miswak contains no artificial ingredients.
◈ If any part of the toothpaste enters the throat, the fast is broken.
Best practice: Use miswak during fasting hours and toothpaste outside fasting times.

❖ Scientific Insights

(1) Ingredients of Toothpaste

Modern toothpaste contains:

Fluoride – for protection against cavities
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) – for foaming
Flavoring agents – like mint, menthol, etc.

(2) Can Toothpaste Reach the Throat?

◈ There is a high likelihood of swallowing foam or residue, especially if rinsing is not thorough.
◈ Scientific studies confirm: even small ingestion of toothpaste components could be considered equivalent to eating.

❖ Summary: Will the Fast Break or Not?

✅ Fast Will Not Break If:

◈ You only rinse your mouth and nothing reaches the throat.
◈ You use natural miswak without additives.

❌ Fast Will Break If:

Toothpaste foam or ingredients enter the throat.
◈ Even accidental ingestion can invalidate the fast.

❖ Recommended Practice (Precautionary Measures)

✔ Use toothpaste before suḥūr or after ifṭār.
✔ During fasting, opt for miswak to maintain oral hygiene.
✔ If using toothpaste during fasting is necessary, rinse the mouth thoroughly with plenty of water and avoid swallowing anything.

❖ Conclusion

Using toothpaste while fasting requires caution, as there's a risk of substances reaching the throat.
If nothing is swallowed and the mouth is rinsed thoroughly, the fast remains valid. However, if anything goes down the throat — even by mistake — the fast is nullified.

Miswak remains the best and safest option during fasting hours.
May Allah accept our fasts and make us mindful in our worship. Āmīn!
