Does the Devil Walk in One Shoe?

Compiled by: Dr. Raza Abdullah Pasha (Hafizahullah)

Answer:

Yes, there is a narration that discourages walking with one shoe, as it is associated with the way of the devil.

Evidence from Hadith:

Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

لا يمش أحدكم في نعل واحدة ليحفهما جميعا أو لينعلهما جميعا

"None of you should walk with one shoe. Either remove both or wear both."
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith No. 77)

Explanation by Scholars:

  • Imam Ibn al-Arabi:
    He mentioned:
"One of the reasons given for this prohibition is that walking in this manner is the way of the devil. Other explanations have also been provided."
    (Fath al-Bari 1/322)

Conclusion:

The prohibition against walking with one shoe is rooted in multiple reasons, one of which is that it is said to be the way of the devil. This indicates the importance of adhering to the etiquettes outlined by Islamic teachings in even seemingly minor aspects of daily life.

Reminder: Always observe balance and proper conduct in your daily activities, as highlighted by prophetic guidance.
