Does Spotting Throughout Ramadan Affect a Woman’s Fasting?

🩸 Spotting Throughout Ramadan: Are a Woman’s Fasts Valid? Islamic Ruling Explained 🩸

Source:

This article is derived from the book 500 Questions & Answers for Women, a compilation of Fatawa by the Scholars of the Haramain. Translated by Hafiz Abdullah Saleem.

❖ Question:

If a woman experiences visible spots or drops of blood throughout the days of Ramadan and continues to fast, are her fasts valid?

❖ Answer:

Yes, her fasts are valid.
The spots or drops of blood that appear during Ramadan in such a manner are not considered menstrual blood.

🩸 These marks are insignificant and are usually caused by ruptured veins or light bleeding, which does not invalidate fasting.

📖 Supporting Evidence:

A statement is attributed to ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib رضي الله عنه:

"إن هذه النقط التى تكون كعاف الأنف ليست بحيض"
“Indeed, these spots (of blood) are like nosebleeds—they are not menstruation.”

📌 This means that such minor spotting is comparable to a nosebleed, and hence, does not prevent prayer or fasting.

❖ Summary:

Fasts are valid even if spotting occurs throughout Ramadan.
✔ Such blood is not menstrual (ḥayḍ) but due to vein rupture or similar reasons.
✔ Therefore, the woman does not stop fasting or praying in this case.
