Does Silent or Loud Recitation in the Wrong Prayer Require Sajdah al-Sahw?

❀ Clarification on Recitation in Silent (Sirriyyah) and Audible (Jahriyyah) Prayers ❀
Source: Fatāwā ʿUlamāʾ-e-Ḥadīth, Kitāb al-Ṣalāh, Volume 1

✿ Question:

If one recites aloud in a silent prayer or recites silently in an audible prayer, does this necessitate Sajdah al-Sahw (prostration of forgetfulness)?

✿ Answer:

No, Sajdah al-Sahw is not obligatory in this case.

✿ Explanation:

Dhuhr and ʿAsr are silent prayers (Ṣalāt Sirriyyah), yet it is authentically reported:

((يُسْمِعُنَا الآيَة أحيانًا))

Narrated by Abū Qatādah رضي الله عنه:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite Sūrah al-Fātiḥah and another Sūrah in the first two rakʿahs of Dhuhr and ʿAsr, and only Sūrah al-Fātiḥah in the latter two.
Occasionally, he would make us hear a verse aloud.
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī)

Thus, reciting aloud in a silent prayer or silently in an audible prayer is contrary to the Sunnah, but it does not invalidate the prayer, nor does it require Sajdah al-Sahw.

✔ Summary:

  • ❌ No Sajdah al-Sahw is required if one recites aloud in a silent prayer or silently in an audible prayer.
  • ⚠️ It is, however, against the Sunnah, and one should strive to follow the prescribed method of recitation.

Allah knows best.
