❀ Question:
Does Shaytan eat and drink while standing?
❀ Answer:
Yes.
It is established from authentic narrations that Shaytan eats and drinks while standing. Islam teaches Muslims to avoid this manner, as it resembles the way of Shaytan.
✿ Hadith Evidence:
✔ Narrated by Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
«لا يشربن أحدكم قائما، فمن نسي فليستقي»
“None of you should drink while standing. Whoever forgets, let him vomit.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Ḥadīth No. 2026]
✔ Narrated by Sayyiduna Anas رضي الله عنه:
The Noble Prophet ﷺ said:
«نهى أن يشرب الرجل قائما، قال قتادة: قلنا: فالأكل؟ فقال: ذاك أشر أو أخبث»
“He forbade a man from drinking while standing.”
Qatādah رحمه الله said: “We asked: What about eating?”
He replied: “That is worse or more evil.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Ḥadīth No. 2024]
❖ Conclusion:
From the above, it becomes clear that:
◈ The majority of scholars consider eating and drinking while standing to be disliked (makruh) unless there is a necessity.
◈ Sitting while eating and drinking is the Sunnah and the preferred method in Islam.
◈ Shaytan is known to eat and drink while standing, hence Muslims are discouraged from adopting such behavior.
