Does Shayṭān Make People Rebellious?

Compiled by: Dr. Raza Abdullah Pasha ḥafiẓahullāh

❖ Question:

Does Shayṭān incite people to rebellion?

❖ Answer:

Yes, indeed!

Allah ﷻ says in the Qur’ān:

﴿أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّا أَرْسَلْنَا الشَّيَاطِينَ عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ تَؤُزُّهُمْ أَزًّا﴾
"Have you not seen that We have sent the devils upon the disbelievers, inciting them with great incitement?"

[Sūrah Maryam: 83]

❖ Explanation:

This verse clarifies that Shayṭān actively provokes and incites the disbelievers, pushing them toward disobedience and rebellion.

According to ʿAwfī, narrating from Ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما, the meaning is as follows:

Shayṭān stirs up disbelievers against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his noble Companions.

❖ He leads them toward disobedience to Allah, luring them through deception and false promises.

❖ He gradually transforms them into complete rebels, stubborn in their disbelief and disobedience.

❖ Summary:

✔ Shayṭān plays a key role in the moral and spiritual rebellion of people, especially disbelievers.
✔ He pushes them persistently toward opposition against divine guidance.
✔ His aim is not just casual disobedience, but to make people defiant and deeply entrenched in rebellion.
