Does Satan have any association with bells?
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:
"The angels do not accompany a group in which there is a dog or a bell."
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 2113)
It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه) that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:
"The bell is the flute of Satan."
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 2114)
Some scholars have mentioned that the bell is similar to a 'Naqous' (a wooden clapper used in churches) or that it falls under prohibited instruments. Others have stated that the reason for the bell being referred to as "the flute of Satan" is its unpleasant and disliked sound, and the hadith mentioning Mazamīr al-Shayṭān (flutes of Satan) supports this view.
Thus, we advise people to replace the prohibited sound-producing bells in their homes, including mobile phone ringtones, and use tones that bring the pleasure of Allah and His Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم).
