Does Lying Down Most of the Day While Fasting Affect Its Reward?
Source: Fatāwā Arkān al-Islām
If a fasting person, due to intense hunger or thirst, spends most of the day lying down, does this affect the validity or reward of the fast?
All praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. To proceed:
This has no effect on the validity of the fast. In fact, such action may even increase the reward, because the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها:
«أجرُكِ عَلٰى قَدْرِ نَصَبِكِ»
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 1787, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 211)
"Your reward will be in accordance with the hardship you endure."
The more effort or hardship a person endures in obedience and servitude to Allah, the greater the reward he or she will receive.
At the same time, it is also permissible to take measures to ease the intensity of fasting, such as cooling down with water or sitting in a cool place.
🖋 This is what I hold, and Allah knows best what is correct.
