📝 Answered by: Fadhilatush-Shaykh Saeed Mujtaba Saeedi (حفظه الله) & Fadhilatul-‘Aalim Hafiz Muhammad Tahir (حفظه الله)

❓ The Question

Is it true that pouring hot water on the ground can harm the jinn?

✅ Answer

This belief is not correct and there is no authentic evidence in the Shari’ah (Islamic law) that supports this claim.

📚 Clarification:

  • There is no sahih hadith or clear proof from the Qur’an or Sunnah stating that pouring hot water on the earth causes harm to the jinn.
  • While it is part of our belief that jinn dwell on the earth and sometimes near desolate or unclean places, the idea that randomly pouring hot water harms them is based on cultural superstition, not on verified Islamic teachings.
  • Islam emphasizes clear evidence in matters of belief and rulings. In the absence of such evidence, one should avoid affirming such claims.

❗ Common Cultural Misconception

  • In some cultures, people believe that pouring hot water on the ground without saying "Bismillah" harms hidden jinn and may cause them to retaliate.
  • This belief has no basis in authentic Islamic sources and must not be considered a religious ruling.

🕌 Islamic Guidance

Although there's no proof that hot water harms jinn, saying "Bismillah" before performing actions is a general Sunnah and a good habit in itself:

"Every important action not begun with the name of Allah is cut off (from blessing)."
(Sunan Abi Dawood – weak but supported by general meanings)

📌 Conclusion

  • ❌ There is no authentic Islamic evidence that pouring hot water on the ground harms the jinn.
  • ✅ It is good to say “Bismillah” before such actions, but not because of any fear of harming jinn—rather, as a general practice of remembrance and blessing.
