Does Playing Chess Break the Fast or Reduce Its Reward?

Does playing chess affect the validity of the fast?

✿ Answer:​


Playing chess is ḥarām (forbidden), and there are stern warnings against it.


❀ Statement of ʿAllāmah Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr رحمه الله (463 AH):​


أجمع أهل العلم على أن النرد والشطرنج قمار محرم
"The scholars are in consensus that playing dice and chess is gambling, which is forbidden."
(al-Tamhīd: 13/182, al-Istidhkār: 8/462)


✅ Ruling:
① Playing chess does not invalidate the fast.
② However, it reduces the reward of fasting due to engaging in a prohibited act.
