✿ Ruling on Using Nasal Medication While Fasting – In Light of Qur’an & Hadith ✿
Authored by: Qari Usama bin Abdus-Salam (حفظه الله)
While explaining the rulings of fasting, Allah ﷻ says:
(Surah Al-Baqarah: 187)
Translation:
“And eat and drink until the white thread becomes distinct to you from the black thread of dawn. Then complete the fast until nightfall.”
☛ This verse clearly identifies eating and drinking as actions that break the fast. However, it does not directly mention nasal medication.
Narrated by Laqit ibn Sabrah
(Sunan Abī Dāwūd: 142, At-Tirmidhī: 788, Ibn Mājah: 407)
Translation:
“Exaggerate in inhaling water into the nose (during wudu) unless you are fasting.”
☛ This Hadith indicates that the nasal passage is a direct route into the body, and any substance entering it could reach the throat or stomach, thereby invalidating the fast.
Narrated from Ibn Abbas
(Sunan ad-Dāraqutnī: 2/185, Hadith 2196)
Translation:
“Fasting is broken by what enters the body, not by what comes out.”
☛ If nasal medication reaches the throat or stomach, it is regarded as something entering the body, thus breaking the fast.
There is no specific recorded debate among the Companions or Tabi'un regarding nasal medications. However, they emphasized extreme caution in nasal rinsing during wudū’ while fasting — showing sensitivity to the possibility of entry into the body via the nose.
If a substance reaches the throat through the nose, the fast is invalidated.
Ibn ʿĀbidīn (رحمه الله) says:
(Radd al-Muḥtār, 2/98)
Translation: “The fast is broken by anything that reaches the interior (of the body), whether through a natural or unnatural passage.”
If medication enters the stomach via the nose, the fast is broken.
Ibn Rushd (رحمه الله) writes:
(Bidāyat al-Mujtahid, 1/382)
The fast is invalid if medicine through the nose reaches the throat.
Imam Nawawī (رحمه الله) states:
(Al-Majmūʿ, 6/317)
If water reaches the throat through the nose, the fast is broken.
Ibn Qudāmah (رحمه الله) says:
(Al-Mughnī, 3/126)
The ruling on using nasal medication while fasting can be summarized as follows:
◈ If the medication reaches the throat, the fast is broken.
◈ If it remains only in the nasal cavity, the fast remains valid.
◈ As a precaution, avoid nasal medication while fasting.
◈ If treatment is essential, administer the medication before Suhoor or after Iftar.
◈ If medication is unavoidable and the illness severe:
➊ Make up the fast later when recovered.
➋ If permanent illness prevents fasting, give fidyah as prescribed.
☀ This ruling is thoroughly supported by the Qur’an, Hadith, consensus of early scholars, and the established positions of the four Imams.
May Allah grant us understanding of the Deen and enable us to act upon it correctly. Āmīn.

❀ Qur’anic Perspective

❀ Hadith-Based Evidence
① Caution in Nasal Inhalation During Fasting
Narrated by Laqit ibn Sabrah
(Sunan Abī Dāwūd: 142, At-Tirmidhī: 788, Ibn Mājah: 407)
Translation:
“Exaggerate in inhaling water into the nose (during wudu) unless you are fasting.”
☛ This Hadith indicates that the nasal passage is a direct route into the body, and any substance entering it could reach the throat or stomach, thereby invalidating the fast.
② Fasting Is Broken by What Enters, Not by What Exits
Narrated from Ibn Abbas
(Sunan ad-Dāraqutnī: 2/185, Hadith 2196)
Translation:
“Fasting is broken by what enters the body, not by what comes out.”
☛ If nasal medication reaches the throat or stomach, it is regarded as something entering the body, thus breaking the fast.
❀ Understanding from the Companions and Tabi'un
There is no specific recorded debate among the Companions or Tabi'un regarding nasal medications. However, they emphasized extreme caution in nasal rinsing during wudū’ while fasting — showing sensitivity to the possibility of entry into the body via the nose.
