Does Mere Suckling Establish Milk Kinship in Islam?

Source: Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulām Muṣṭafā Ẓahīr Amn Pūrī

✿ Question:

If a baby only latched onto the breast without actually drinking milk, does that establish the prohibition of Riḍāʿah (milk kinship)?

✿ Answer:

The prohibition through Riḍāʿah is only established after a minimum of five feedings.
Simply latching on or suckling once or twice does not establish the prohibition.

❀ Evidence:

Sayyidah ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها narrated:

**
لا تُحرِمُ المصَّةُ ولا المصَّتانِ
**
"One or two sucklings do not establish the prohibition of Riḍāʿah."

📚 Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 1450

✔ Summary:

At least five full breastfeeding sessions are required to establish the prohibition of Riḍāʿah.
Mere suckling once or twice or just latching the mouth onto the breast is not sufficient to make the child maḥram (non-marriageable kin).
