Does Kissing or Finding Wetness Require Ghusl?

Source: Fatāwā Arkān-e-Islām

1. Kissing, Physical Affection, and Ghusl

  • Mere kissing, hugging, or enjoying each other’s company does not make ghusl obligatory.
  • Ghusl becomes obligatory only if semen (mani) is discharged.

Ruling:

  • If both spouses ejaculate, both must perform ghusl.
  • If only one of them ejaculates, then only that person must perform ghusl.

2. In Case of Sexual Intercourse

If actual intercourse (jima‘) occurs:

  • Ghusl is obligatory for both spouses — whether or not ejaculation happens.

Evidence:
Narrated by Abu Hurairah (RA):

«إِذَا جَلَسَ بَيْنَ شُعَبِهَا الْأَرْبَعِ ثُمَّ جَهَدَهَا فَقَدْ وَجَبَ الْغُسْلُ»
"When a man sits between her four limbs and exerts himself, ghusl becomes obligatory."
[Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith: 291; Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 348]

3. Common Misconception

It is a mistaken belief that if intercourse takes place without ejaculation, ghusl is not required.

  • This is incorrect and contrary to authentic hadith.
  • Any intercourse requires ghusl — ejaculation or not.

4. Summary

  • Kissing/affection without ejaculation: No ghusl required.
  • Ejaculation (with or without intercourse): Ghusl required.
  • Intercourse: Ghusl required for both parties, even without ejaculation.
