Question:
Does extravagance and excess in preparing food for Iftar diminish the reward of fasting?
Answer:
Extravagance in Iftar does not reduce the reward of fasting, nor does any sinful act committed after the completion of fasting reduce its reward. However, this act falls under the prohibition mentioned in Allah’s statement:
"Eat and drink, but do not be extravagant. Indeed, He does not like those who are extravagant."
(Surah Al-A’raf: 7:31)
Thus, extravagance is inherently prohibited. Moderation, on the other hand, is a hallmark of prudent living. Moreover, if one possesses surplus wealth or food, it is better to give it in charity.
