Does Backbiting Break the Fast? Qur’ān and Sunnah Answer

❀ Does Backbiting Invalidate the Fast? – A Qur’ān and Ḥadīth-Based Review ❀
Written by: Qārī Usāmah bin ʿAbd al-Salām ḥafiẓahullāh

❖ Backbiting and the Fast

Backbiting (ghībah) is a major sin, but it does not invalidate the fast in the legal (sharʿī) sense. However, it significantly reduces or nullifies the spiritual rewards and blessings of fasting. The essential aim of fasting is to attain taqwā (piety) and avoid all forms of evil—and backbiting is a direct contradiction of that objective.

❖ In the Light of the Qur’ān:

Allah ﷻ says:

📖 Sūrah al-Ḥujurāt (49:12)
"وَلَا يَغْتَب بَّعْضُكُم بَعْضًا ۚ أَيُحِبُّ أَحَدُكُمْ أَن يَأْكُلَ لَحْمَ أَخِيهِ مَيْتًا فَكَرِهْتُمُوهُ ۚ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَوَّابٌ رَّحِيمٌ"

Translation:

“And do not backbite one another. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.”

Key Point:
This verse clearly portrays backbiting as a despicable and hateful sin, something to be especially avoided while fasting, when one is meant to elevate spiritually.

❖ In the Light of the Ḥadīth:

✦ Backbiting Diminishes the Reward of Fasting

Narrated by Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

📖 Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, ḥadīth no. 1903
"مَنْ لَمْ يَدَعْ قَوْلَ الزُّورِ وَالْعَمَلَ بِهِ، فَلَيْسَ لِلَّهِ حَاجَةٌ فِي أَنْ يَدَعَ طَعَامَهُ وَشَرَابَهُ"

Translation:

“Whoever does not give up false speech and acting upon it, then Allah has no need for him to give up his food and drink.”

Key Point:
This ḥadīth emphasizes that if one continues engaging in backbiting, lying, or immoral actions while fasting, the true purpose and reward of fasting is lost, leaving only hunger and thirst behind.

❖ Fasting Is Meant for Patience and Righteousness

Also reported by Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ said:

📖 Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, ḥadīth no. 1894
"الصِّيَامُ جُنَّةٌ، فَإِذَا كَانَ أَحَدُكُمْ صَائِمًا، فَلَا يَرْفُثْ، وَلَا يَصْخَبْ، فَإِنْ سَابَّهُ أَحَدٌ أَوْ قَاتَلَهُ، فَلْيَقُلْ: إِنِّي صَائِمٌ، إِنِّي صَائِمٌ"

Translation:

“Fasting is a shield. So, when one of you is fasting, he should neither indulge in indecent speech nor raise his voice in dispute. If someone insults or fights him, he should say: ‘I am fasting, I am fasting.’”

Key Point:
This ḥadīth underlines the discipline, patience, and verbal restraint that a fasting person must uphold—especially by avoiding backbiting and quarrels.

✿ Conclusion:

Backbiting does not invalidate the fast, but it destroys its reward and spiritual benefits.
◈ The core purpose of fasting is to train the soul and avoid sinful conduct, whereas backbiting undermines this objective.
◈ Whoever backbites while fasting should repent immediately and engage in seeking forgiveness (istighfār).
◈ To ensure the full blessings and acceptance of the fast, one must guard the tongue and refrain from all forms of evil speech.

❀ Supplication:

May Allah grant us true understanding of fasting and the strength to protect our tongues from sins, especially during Ramaḍān. Āmīn!
