Does Accidentally Swallowing Water During Wudu Break the Fast?

❀ Ruling on Water Reaching the Stomach During Rinsing in Fast

Source: Fatāwā Arkan-e-Islam

✦ The Question

If a fasting person accidentally swallows water during rinsing the mouth (kali) or cleaning the nose (istinshāq), does it invalidate the fast?

✦ Shar‘i Ruling

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!

✔ If a fasting person, while performing wudu or ghusl,
performs mouth rinsing or puts water into the nose,
and some water reaches the stomach unintentionally,
the fast does not break.

✦ Reasoning

◈ This is because the action occurred without intention or deliberate will, and such unintentional acts do not invalidate the fast.

✦ Qur’anic Evidence

Allah ﷻ says:

﴿وَلَيسَ عَلَيكُم جُناحٌ فيما أَخطَأتُم بِهِ وَلـكِن ما تَعَمَّدَت قُلوبُكُم﴾
(Surah al-Aḥzāb: 5)

“There is no blame upon you for what you do by mistake, but (you are accountable for) what your hearts intend deliberately.”

✔ Conclusion:

❀ If water enters the stomach unintentionally while rinsing or during nasal cleansing:
✅ The fast remains valid.
✅ There is no sin, as it was done without intention.
⚠ However, one should be cautious during fasting to avoid excessiveness in rinsing or sniffing water.
