❀ Ruling on a Menstruating Woman’s Prayer During Travel ❀
✦ Written by: Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amaanpuri
If a woman departs from home while menstruating and becomes pure after reaching her destination—where she intends to stay for two days—should she shorten the prayers (Qasr) or pray them in full?
Such a woman may perform Qasr, because she is considered a traveler (Musafir).
The rulings of travel are not nullified by the state of menstruation.
This ruling is based on general evidences, and the principle demands that she be treated as a traveler from the moment she left her home.
Some have written:
“Issue: If a woman sets out with the intention of traveling four stages (Manzils), but the first two stages pass during her menstruation, then she is not considered a traveler. After purification, she must perform full four-unit prayers.”
[Bahishti Zewar by Thanawi, Part 2, p. 49; Ahsan al-Fatawa by Ladhiyanwi: 4/87; ‘Umdat al-Fiqh by Zawar Hussain Deobandi, Part 2, p. 414]
This opinion is entirely baseless and lacks any valid evidence.
② Once she becomes pure during the journey or upon arrival, she should shorten her prayers as per the rulings of a Musafir.
③ Claims requiring her to pray full units due to menstruation are unsupported by Shar‘i proof.
