Do You Need to Remove Artificial Teeth During Wudu?

🦷 Is It Necessary to Remove Artificial Teeth During Wudu? 🦷

Source:

This article is derived from the book 500 Questions & Answers for Women, a compilation of Fatawa by the Scholars of the Haramain. Translated by Hafiz Abdullah Saleem.

❖ Question:

When a person has artificial (false) teeth, is it obligatory to remove them during rinsing (madmadah) while performing wudu (ablution)?

❖ Answer:

When a person wears artificial teeth, the apparent and correct view is that:

➡️ It is not obligatory to remove them during wudu.

These artificial teeth are similar to rings, and it is not obligatory to remove a ring while performing wudu.
Rather, at most, it is preferable to move the ring slightly on the finger—but even this is not obligatory.

❖ Supporting Reason:

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم used to wear a ring, yet there is no narration that he removed it during wudu.
This is significant because a ring is more likely to prevent water from reaching the skin than artificial teeth are to block the water in the mouth.

Moreover, in some cases, removing artificial teeth can be difficult and burdensome for certain individuals.
Hence, the ease and concession in this matter is in line with the merciful nature of Islamic law.

❖ Summary:

Removing artificial teeth is not required during wudu.
✔ Artificial teeth are likened to rings, which also do not need to be removed.
✔ The Sunnah of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم supports this ease.
✔ Those who may find it burdensome to remove them are not obligated to do so.
