❀ Do Jinn Have Male and Female Genders?

Answer:

Yes, jinn do have both male and female genders.

It is narrated from Sayyidunā Anas (raḍiyallāhu ʿanhu) that whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the toilet, he would say:

"اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ"

[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī Ḥadīth No. 142, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim Ḥadīth No. 375]

“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the male and female evil jinn.”

Imām Ibn al-Athīr (raḥimahullāh)
explains:
  • "Khubuth" is the plural of "khabīth" (male evil jinn)
  • "Khabā’ith" is the plural of "khabīthah" (female evil jinn)
This indicates that the Prophet ﷺ was referring to both genders among the jinn.
    [Lisān al-ʿArab, 2/1088]
It is also known that jinn have a system of marriage, and by nature, marriage takes place between male and female. This further confirms the existence of gender among the jinn.
