Excerpted from: "Tuhfa-e-Hanafiyyah" by Maulana Abu Suhaib Dawood Arshad ḥafiẓahullāh
(This book is a well-reasoned response to Tuhfa Ahl-e-Hadith, authored by the Deobandi scholar Abu Bilal Jhangvi.)
The Claim:
Jhangvi states that while Ahl al-Sunnah believe in the reward and punishment in the grave, the present-day non-muqallid Ahl-e-Hadith reject it.
(Tuhfa Ahl-e-Hadith, p. 53)
The Response:
① First:
I am genuinely astonished—what should I write in response? What evidence has Jhangvi provided that I may refute? When the entire claim is built not merely on suspicion but on slander, lies, and deliberate misrepresentation, then the only suitable reply is:
لَعْنَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَى الْكَاذِبِينَ
There are numerous Qur’anic verses and mutawātir aḥādīth proving the punishment of the grave.
How can any Ahl-e-Hadith ever deny it?
Jhangvi should be aware that anyone who denies the punishment of the grave holds a corrupt belief, is wretched, a severe innovator, and outside the fold of Ahl al-Sunnah.
Until he renounces this wicked belief, it is impermissible to treat him as a Muslim, and if he dies upon it, his funeral prayer should not be performed.
② Second:
Jhangvi’s own writing confirms that he accuses only the present-day scholars of Ahl-e-Hadith of this belief, while he admits that the earlier scholars of Ahl-e-Hadith affirmed the punishment of the grave.
Thus, there is no need to present evidence from all the previous muḥaddithūn.
As for contemporary scholars of Ahl-e-Hadith, we invite readers to verify this directly by consulting any local Ahl-e-Hadith scholar.
Jhangvi should read the work of our respected teacher Maulana Muhammad Yahya Gondalwi ḥafiẓahullāh, particularly "ʿAqīdah Ahl-e-Ḥadīth", p. 341.
In shā’ Allāh, all his doubts and confusions will be resolved.
However, stubbornness is a terminal disease. For this, Jhangvi is advised to recite the phrase:
لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ الْعَلِيِّ الْعَظِيمِ
ten times every morning.
In shā’ Allāh, this healing remedy will cure him.
If anything remains, Jhangvi should also remember once or twice a day:
"إذا حدَّث كذب" – “When the hypocrite speaks, he lies.”
In shā’ Allāh, this too will bring about healing.
