❀ Question
A man wrote and sent a divorce notice to his wife, but it never reached her, meaning the wife did not become aware of that first divorce. After some time, the same husband wrote and sent two more divorces, which the wife did receive.
The question is: Have three divorces taken effect upon the wife, even though she had no knowledge of the first one?
❀ Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!
In the mentioned situation, three divorces have indeed taken effect upon the woman, even though she had no knowledge of the first divorce.
For the occurrence of divorce, it is not a condition that the woman must be aware of it.
Rather, once the husband issues the divorce, it becomes valid and binding, even if the wife comes to know of it later.
