Distribution of Qurbani Meat: Are Three Equal Shares Mandatory? – A Research-Based Article

Compiled by: en.tohed.com

1) Introduction
The purpose of sacrifice (Qurbani) is to seek Allah’s pleasure and support the needy. Shari‘ah only requires that you eat some of the meat yourself and give some in charity. A fixed rule of dividing it into three equal parts does not exist.

2) Qur’anic Principles
Surah al-Ḥajj, 28:
“So eat of them and feed the suffering, the poor.”

Surah al-Ḥajj, 36:
“So eat of them and feed the contented poor and the one who openly asks.”

Neither verse sets an exact proportion—only the emphatic instruction to eat and to feed.

3) Prophetic Sunnah (ﷺ)
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1971)
“I forbade you (last year) from storing the meat because of the incoming travellers; now eat, store, and give in charity.”

Three actions are mentioned—eat, store, give—but no command to create three equal portions.

4) Practice of the Companions (R. A.)

Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنه)
:
“He would feed one-third to his household, one-third to poor neighbours, and give one-third in charity to beggars.”
—Abū Mūsā al-Aṣfahānī, al-Waẓāʾif

Ibn ʿUmar (رضي الله عنه):
“From the sacrificial animals and donations: one-third is for you, one-third for your family, and one-third for the needy.”
—Ibn Qudāmah, al-Mugnī 9/488

This was their preferred method, not an obligation.

5) Juristic Summary (Plain Text)

  • []Ḥanafīs & Ḥanbalīs: Dividing into thirds is recommended; giving more or less in charity is still valid (based on the above Aathār).
    [
]Shāfiʿīs: Giving roughly half in charity is sufficient; they rely on the general wording of the Qur’an.
  • Contemporary Muftis (e.g., Shaykh Ibn Bāz, IslamWeb): The essential aim is fulfilling the rights of the poor; the ratio is flexible. Sacrifice is not invalidated if the meat is not split equally.
Unanimous principle: the poor must receive a reasonable share.

6) Practical Guidelines
  1. Minimum Sunnah:
     • Eat some yourself / with family.
     • Give some in charity to the needy.

  2. Optimal Distribution:
     • ≈ ⅓ charity (poor & destitute)
     • ≈ ⅓ gift (relatives, neighbours, friends)
     • ≈ ⅓ personal/family consumption
(Numbers may be adjusted to increase the poor’s share when needed.)

  3. Storing Meat:
The early three-day storage ban has been abrogated. Keeping meat longer is now permitted.

  4. Butcher’s Fee:
Do not pay the butcher with meat or hide; wages must be in cash.

7) Conclusion
Neither Qur’an nor ḥadith fixes a quantity; they simply instruct us to eat and to feed. The Companions’ “three-part” model offers balance and ease—it is recommended, not mandatory.

Core rule: Charity comes first, then gifts to relatives, and the remainder for oneself.

Allāhumma taqabbal minnā wa minkum — May Allah accept our sacrifices and grant us the ability to comfort those in need. Āmīn.
