Did Iblis Intend to Burn the Face of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)?

Compiled by: Dr. Raza Abdullah Pasha (Hafidhahullah)

Response:

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Darda (RA) that he said:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stood up for prayer, and we heard him say:

"I seek refuge in Allah from you." Then he (ﷺ) said: "I curse you with the complete curse of Allah" three times, and he extended his hand as if he were grabbing something. When he finished the prayer, we said:

"O Messenger of Allah! We heard you saying something in the prayer that we had never heard you say before, and we saw you extending your hand?"
He (ﷺ) replied:

"Indeed, the enemy of Allah, Iblis, came with a flame of fire to place it on my face, so I said three times: ‘I seek refuge in Allah from you.’ Then I said: ‘I curse you with the complete curse of Allah,’ but he did not back off after three times. I wanted to grab him, and by Allah, if it weren’t for the supplication of my brother Sulayman, he would have been tied up, and the children of Madinah would have played with him."

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 542)

Explanation:

This Hadith demonstrates that Iblis physically attempted to harm the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) by bringing a flame of fire. The Prophet (ﷺ) sought Allah’s protection, cursed Iblis, and was ready to capture him, but he refrained due to the special prayer of Prophet Sulayman (AS), who had asked Allah for a unique authority over jinn.

This incident highlights the importance of seeking refuge in Allah from Satan’s harm, as even the Prophet (ﷺ) relied on Allah’s protection.
